Pune, April 20, 2025: In a major development that has stirred public outrage, the Pune Police on Saturday registered a case of medical negligence against Dr Sushrut Ghaisas of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. The case was filed at Alankar Police Station after a detailed report by Sassoon Hospital’s committee held him accountable for failing to provide timely medical treatment to a critically ill pregnant woman, Tanisha Bhise.
According to official reports, Tanisha Bhise was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on March 28 in a critical condition. However, despite the urgency of her situation, the hospital allegedly refused to initiate treatment until the family paid a deposit of Rs 10 lakh. Family members accused that despite the criticality of Tanisha Bhise, the hospital staff remained unmoved and insisted on advance payment before any medical intervention. Unfortunately, this delay in the timely treatment of Bhise led to her death.
The shocking incident came to light after Bhise’s sister-in-law, Priyanka Tate, lodged a formal complaint at the Alankar Police Station. The complaint alleged that even after repeated pleas from the family, the hospital delayed treatment by over five hours, leading to a tragic and entirely preventable death. The family has accused Dr Ghaisas and the hospital administration of gross negligence and inhumanity.
The incident triggered widespread anger and condemnation across the state. After that, the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission immediately took cognisance and held the hospital accountable for Bhise’s death. This was followed by the Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC), which also submitted its report indicting the hospital for lapses in care and protocol.
However, the matter did not end there. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar found several inconsistencies in the initial report submitted by Sassoon Hospital’s expert panel. He raised four specific queries and directed the committee to revise and resubmit the report. Following this directive, the updated report was submitted to the police on Saturday.
Based on the final findings, the Pune Police booked Dr Sushrut Ghaisas under charges of medical negligence. The investigation is currently underway, and further legal action is expected. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sambhaji Kadam, said, “The Sassoon Hospital committee sent a report to the police on Saturday. In this report, charges of medical negligence were laid against Dr. Ghaisas. After which the police registered a case in this matter. Further action will be taken after examining the legal aspects.”
