Pune, January 24, 2025: Despite repeated warnings given by Pune Police, a significant number of citizens continue to fall victim to cybercriminals, resulting in substantial financial losses. Alarmed by the surge in cyber fraud cases, Pune Police have proposed establishing a dedicated cyber lab in the city, inspired by the Navi Mumbai model, to enhance their investigative capabilities.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed efforts to set up the cyber lab, stating that a formal proposal will soon be submitted to the Home Department. The initiative aims to equip Pune Police with advanced tools to combat the growing menace of cybercrime effectively.
On Thursday, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar conducted an annual review of criminal activities in Pune. During this session, he highlighted the worrying rise in cybercrime and outlined the steps being taken to address the issue. “National-level investigative agencies are working to prevent cybercrime. Meanwhile, Pune Police have been issuing regular advisories to educate citizens,” he said, urging people to remain vigilant against online scams.
Last year, the then Home Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art cyber lab in Navi Mumbai to counter the escalating cybercrime in the region. Pune Police are now looking to replicate this model.
“We will soon forward the proposal for the cyber lab to the Home Department. The increasing cybercrime in Pune necessitates the creation of dedicated cyber police stations. Fact-finding efforts are underway,” Commissioner Kumar stated. Currently, Pune’s cyber police station operates out of the Shivajinagar Police Headquarters.
