Pune, April 30, 2025: Touted as the “Oxford of the East”, Pune city has been jolted by a disturbing case of ragging emerging from the prestigious B.J. Medical College. As per the information, a first-year postgraduate student has alleged that he was subjected to prolonged harassment and ragging by two senior doctors from the same department of the institute.
In this regard, the victim student’s parents directly complained to the Department of Medical Education in Mumbai. After that, the college administration took a serious note of this incident and formed a high-level Anti-Ragging Committee to investigate the incident.
As per the information, the victim student is studying for the first year of his master’s degree at B.J. Medical College. The student accused two students from the second year of the same department of constantly harassing him for the past few months. They were making fun of him by forcing him to alternately pour hot and cold water over his head to humiliate and mentally torture him.
Initially, the victim approached the head of the Orthopaedics Department, Dr Girish Bartakke, with a complaint. However, the student alleges that Dr Bartakke failed to act on the issue. Shockingly, the victim also accused that even the dean of the Sassoon Hospital, Dr Eknath Pawar, did not take notice of his complaint.
Finally, the parents of the victim student complained about the incident to the Department of Medical Education in Mumbai. After that, the administration of the college sprang into action and promptly constituted a high-level Anti-Ragging Committee to probe the matter thoroughly.
Meanwhile, the college authorities have maintained a tight lid on media interactions, trying to contain the fallout. The dean of the Sassoon Hospital, Dr Eknath Pawar, has also not given any information to the media so far on the incident. Further, it has been learnt that the accused students have now been suspended for six months — effectively one academic term — as per the findings of the inquiry committee.
