
INDIA’S top classical vocalist Prabha Atre passed away in Pune today (January 13, 2024). She was 92 year old.
Ms Atre, suffered a heart attack early this morning. She was admitted to Deenanth Mangeshkar Hospital where she breathed her last.
“She was one of the finest classical vocalist of India. She performed creditably everytime she took the stage,” Loksatta editor Mukund Sangoram told ABP Majha, a Marathi news channel.
Sangoram said Ms Atre was slated to perform in Mumbai today. ”She was also going to be honoured for her contribution to classical music world,” he said.
Ms Atre, who was honoured by the India Government with all three Padma awards, was born in Pune. She was attracted to the music world from her childhood.
Sangoram said Ms Atre had performed during recently Sawai Gandharva festival where she regaled the audience with her superb performance. She was a regular at the Sawai festival and a popular choice across the country.
