Pune, April 28, 2025: After the Pune police arrested the third accused involved in the outrageous Bopdev Ghat gang rape case, the district court sentenced him to five days of police custody on Sunday, April 27. The court sentenced him to police custody to conduct his DNA testing, and for that, his blood, nail, hair and other samples will be taken. As he has been absconding for the past six and a half months, the police will investigate him regarding that.
On October 3 last year, the victim, a college-going girl, had gone to Bopdev Ghat with his male friend in the night. At that time, three accused, namely, Chandrashekhar Raviprasad Kanojia (20), Akhtar Ali Sheikh (28), and Bapya alias Somnath alias Suraj Dashrath Gosavi, brutally assaulted the male friend of the victim girl and took all the goods from both at machete point.
Shockingly, after that, all the accused tied the victim’s friend with rope and heinously raped the girl near the table point area in the Bopdev Ghat. Following the incident, the Crime Branch team of Pune Police arrested the prime accused, Akhtar Sheikh, and Chandrashekhar Kanojia. However, for the past six and a half months, Gosavi had been escaping police arrest.
Finally, on Saturday, April 26, the Walchand Nagar police arrested him near the Akluj ST Bus Stand area. Following his arrest, when he was produced before the court on Sunday, the public prosecutor, Priyanka Vengurlekar, demanded police custody for Gosavi to conduct his medical examination and to interrogate him further about the crime. She also stated that the crime committed by the accused is heinous and gruesome and deserves a stringent punishment.
Hearing the arguments, the court sentenced five days of police custody to the accused. In this case, the police have filed a 500-page chargesheet against the accused. Further, the police have also recovered stolen goods by the accused from the victim girl and her friend from the accused, including a gold chain along with weapons used by the accused.
