Pune, October 2, 2024: Cybercriminals continue to orchestrate fraudulent schemes in the city. In the latest incident, two victims in Pune lost a total of Rs. 57 lakhs in separate incidents. In this regard, cases have been registered at the Shivajinagar and Warje police stations.
In the first case, a young man from Karve Nagar filed a complaint at the Warje police station. The complainant reported that cyber thieves had contacted him a few days ago, offering lucrative opportunities to work from home through online tasks. Initially, the young man completed a task and received payment, which built trust between them.
However, the thieves later promised him higher returns for larger investments in online tasks. Over time, they managed to extract a total of Rs. 41.94 lakhs from him. When the plaintiff attempted to contact them for a refund, the thieves became unreachable. Realising he had been defrauded, the man lodged a complaint with the Warje police station. In this case, the crime branch police inspector Badakh is leading the investigation.
In the second case, a woman from the Shivajinagar area fell victim to a scam where cybercriminals posed as officials from the Mumbai Police Crime Branch. The thieves falsely claimed that black money had been transferred from her bank account, threatening legal action and arrest. To avoid this, they asked her to obtain a “no-nonsense certificate” from the Mumbai Police, for which they demanded payment.
The woman, fearing consequences, deposited Rs. 15 lakhs in various installments into the fraudsters’ account. She later realised the scam and filed a complaint at the Shivajinagar police station. Crime Branch Police Inspector Chandrakant Suryawanshi is handling the investigation.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged caution to people from investing money on online websites and doing transactions with unknown people.
