Pune, September 2024: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder that disrupts ovarian function and simultaneously impacts hormonal balance in women. PCOS has been found to affect approximately 8-13% of women in their reproductive age. To receive a diagnosis of PCOS, a person must exhibit at least two of the following signs: elevated androgen levels, irregular menstrual cycles, or the presence of polycystic ovaries.
Doctors at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital emphasize the critical link between stress and a PCOS diagnosis. PCOS symptoms like hair loss, hirsutism, weight gain, and infertility can have a large impact on a female’s mental health and lifestyle. This can result in females becoming more prone to stress, anxiety, and depression.
Additionally, PCOS is associated with elevated cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone, which can contribute to further physiological dysregulation. Henceforth, if a woman with PCOS is stressed, the cortisol levels rise even more. Elevated cortisol levels can exacerbate the production of testosterone, leading to hyperandrogenism, which in turn can intensify the symptoms of PCOS.
Furthermore, since PCOS can also lead to infertility in females, it is a very stressful factor for females. Feelings of guilt and self-perception as a failure are unfortunately common among women with infertility due to PCOS. However, it is still possible to conceive naturally even if you have been diagnosed with PCOS. But, undergoing treatment for the symptoms of PCOS can be very exhausting, so a loved one needs to be there to support the female throughout the process.
“Managing stress is an important component in addressing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and improving overall well-being. The intricate relationship between stress and PCOS underlines the importance of adopting efficient strategies for the betterment of both physical and mental health. Recognizing and addressing stress as a key factor in PCOS management can lead to more effective treatments and a more balanced and fulfilling life.” – Dr. Amit Patil, Associate Director, Obs &Gynecology, IVF specialist & Robotic surgeon at Aditya Birla Memorial emorial Hospital, PCMC, Pune.
